Welcome to Summit Youth Lacrosse for the 2021 Season.
This will be our 7th season bringing competitive youth lacrosse to Central Oregon and future Summit HS Players.
We will field 3 teams this season:
For boys currently in 7 & 8th grade we will have one team consisting of between 18-25 players. Our coach for this year will be Jeff Melville starting his 5th year with SYL, and his 13th year with our HS program.
For boys currently in 5 & 6th grade we will have a team consisting of 18-25 players. The coaches for this year will be John Baumann, and Bradley Medeiros both with extensive youth coaching experience.
For boys currently in 3rd & 4th grade we will run a reduced program, consisting of 3-4 tournaments throughout the season. John Baumann will be heading up this program.
OLD INFO: We will be selecting players via a tryout process. Tryouts will be held as follows:
For our 5/6 & 3/4 teams - Tuesday 2/26/19, and Thursday 2/28/19 – Cascades Academy Field 4:00-5:30PM.
For our 7/8 team – Tuesday 2/26/18, and Thursday 2/28/19, – Cascades Academy Field 5:00-6:30PM.
Official practices will start the following Monday 3/4/19. Practices will be as follows:
3/4 Team – Monday and Thursdays 4:30-6:00PM
5/6 Team – Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday’s from 4:30-6:00PM.
7/8 Team – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday’s from 6:00-7:30PM.
Registration for the 2019 season will open on Monday 1/21/2019. You will need to register your son for tryouts in order to participate. There is NO CHARGE to participate in the tryout process. Once a player qualifies for the team, you will be sent an invoice and will need to pay the team fees of $400 for 5/6 and 7/8, which includes all uniform and tournament fees.
Also, please be aware that there is a fundraising component at Summit Youth Lacrosse, more details to follow, but we expect all families to participate.
We are in the process of finalizing our schedule at this time. Suffice it to say we will have games on weekends starting the first weekend in April and running through the end of May. We may have games even before Spring Break, if we can find some nearby competition.

Jeff Melville is returning for his 11th season with the Storm. He has coached at the Varsity (2013), JV (2009-12 & 2014-16), and youth levels. He brings 18 years youth coaching experience with him.
He is the Executive Director of Thunderstruck Lacrosse Association, the General Manager of Summit HS Boys Lacrosse, and will be coaching the Summit Youth 5/6 grade development team again this year.
Jeff was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a 4 year varsity letterman, and two time captain, on the Wyoming HS Varsity Soccer team.
He played Soccer and Lacrosse at Lewis & Clark College from 1980-84. He was captain and club president of the lacrosse team in 1983 & 84, and is a member of the LC Sports Hall of Fame, inducted in 2011.
Jeff has coached for Bend Metro P&R in both Soccer and Lacrosse. He is one of the individuals that helped BMPR start their lacrosse program here in Bend.
He was awarded the Nike Classic Coach of the year by Oregon Youth Soccer in 2004 for his work with the Bend United Force.
5/6 & 3/4 Coach
John Baumann one of the winningest lacrosse coaches in Washington State history. Baumann has amassed over 200 wins and six State championships at Bellevue high school from 2005 to 2017. He was US Lacrosse Washington Head Coach of the year in 2015 where Bellevue reached the state finals with six starting rookies. He has coached 11 HS All Americans and sent many players off to play D1, Division III and MCLA while Head Coach and Program Director at Bellevue.
As a player, Baumann was an attackman for Oceanside High School on Long Island NY, and went to play college lacrosse at Nassau Community College and then the University at Albany where he was captain and leading point scorer his senior year. He is married to former U Albany women’s lacrosse player Laura and has two boys Daniel and Ryan. John and his family recently moved to Bend from the Seattle area.
